Book Review: The Unteachables

Image
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ‘THE UNTEACHABLES’ BOOK BY GORDON KORMAN!  Introduction:  The Unteachables is an amazing book that was written by Gordon Korman (One of my favorite authors.) on a bunch of kids labelled ‘The Unteachables’ by the students and faculty of Greenwich K-8 School. But this year, they take on possibly the most mundane teacher of all time. BEHOLD Mister Kermit (ribbit ribbit ribbit). The kids range from Elaine, the strong and intimidating hulk of muscle. To Parker, the dyslexic thirteen year old and finally Kiana, who technically does not even belong in Greenwich K-8 School. In this book report I will be talking about my opinion on the cheating scandal (ooh), Parker's unique reading condition, and Elaine (Rhymes with pain)’s false reputation.  My opinion on the students:  Firstly, I want to talk about the students of Room 117. I feel like they are misunderstood and if treated the r

What I like about The Seattle Kraken

Image
The Seattle Kraken is a professional ice hockey team that play in the NHL (National Hockey League). They play in the Pacific Division and made their first debut in the 2021-2022 NHL season. The Seattle Kraken is the first professional ice hockey team to compete in the NHL since the Seattle Metropolitans who won the cup in 1917. Today, I will be talking about how the team came to be, the lore behind their logo, my opinion on the new team and their logo and their unique arena (The Climate Pledge Arena) How The Team Came To Be:  The initial concept for an NHL expansion team in Seattle was first proposed by the Seattle Hockey Partners. The idea was approved in December of 2018 by the NHL. Quick note: An expansion team is a team that is from a new city. On February 13, 2018, the Oak View Group filed an application to the NHL for a request to make a new expansion team and paid a hefty U.S 10 Million application fee. On December 4th 2018, the NHL Board Of Governors unanimously voted to approv

The Football War

Image
(Please note that this article only covers the main points of the war.)  Football, one of the world's most popular sports, is simple to play, easy to understand and all you need is a ball and some imagination. But some countries love football a bit more than others such as El Salvador and Honduras. In fact, they love it so much that they went to war over it.  Tensions:  First of all, you should know that tensions were already high between the two countries. Let me explain. El Salvador albeit being significantly smaller than Honduras has a way larger population than Honduras and so, when illegal immigrants from El Salvador started to flood into Honduras, the Honduran Government didn't like that. The solution? Well, terrorize the Salvadorians of course. (Don’t do that) The Honduran government also started evicting the refugees (who had been living in Honduras for generations) to go back to El Salvador. The Salvadoran governme

A Brief History of Discord

Image
With so many free methods of communication today, such as Whatsapp, Messenger and Telegram, it's hard to think that a new app would pop out of nowhere and revolutionize the gaming, messaging and calling industry. That app is Discord.  Early Beginnings:  Discord was invented by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevsky, on May 13 2015.   (6 years ago!) Both Jason and Stanislav were skilled software designers and they went on to found Hammer and Chisel Inc, a game development company. Hammer and Chisel launched their first game on July 3 2014 called Fates Forever. After a while, both Jason and Stanislav found that they wanted to chat with people/friends outside of gaming So Discord was born.  The Big Switch:  At first, Discord was just a side project started by Jason and Stanislav for enjoyment but they recognized the potential of the idea after they realised that the Fates Forever chat function was s

Zimbabwe Hyperinflation

Image
Zimbabwe Hyperinflation Note: The Monopoly example will be based on the Hong Kong version of Monopoly.  Let's say that you are playing Monopoly with your friends Tom and James. Tom has the most money in the game, James is doing decent and you are struggling financially after a few major setbacks. After a while, you land on a hotel owned by Tom. The future looks bleak until both Tom and James both have to go to the toilet. You have three choices to save your game; 1. Leave the room. 2. Take your chance with the dice and hope for the best. Or, you could choose to print more money. (option 3) Let's say that you choose to print more money. You go to the printer and print ten more five hundred dollar bills. You now have over 5 times the amount needed to buy the most expensive property on the board, The Peak.  Now with your newfound riches, you turn the tables and you become the richest and most powerful player. After an hour, a new development has occurred, everyone now has mo

Zoonotic

Image
I recently learned a new word: Zoonotic. Do you know what it is? Do you know that Zoonotic diseases cause over 2 billion cases of human illness and 2.2 million deaths per year? But what is a Zoonotic disease? A Zoonotic disease is a pathogen (virus) that has been transmitted from an animal to a human. Some examples of Zoonotic diseases are Covid-19, Rabies and Ebola.  Humans usually get infected by a Zoonotic disease by eating a dead infected animal or getting bit. In this case, the animal is called a host (as it compares the animal as an Airbnb and the virus as the renter). The way the virus is transmitted is through infected fluid such as saliva or mucus. The virus infects by traveling into the bloodstream and finding a host cell. The virus that infects the cell and then tampers with its reproduction system to code it to replicate the virus. Now what the virus has to do is just stay alive until it multiplies. During this time period, the body's immune system will try to track dow

How Ancient Emperors Mantained Power and Control:

Image
Emperor Hadrian was the 14th Roman emperor who came to power when he was aged 41, ruling for 20 years. (From August 117 to July 138) Hadrian was a strict, cunning and imposing leader often finding clever ways to get what he wanted. Emperor Shi Huang Di was a Chinese emperor ruling for 26 years. He came to power aged 38 and was a cruel but also clever emperor building a wall spanning across his northern border. Both of these men used different tactics to keep power and control. For example, Emperor Hadrian used a strict punishment system to keep everyone in line and Emperor Shi Huang Di put criminals in the army to discipline them.  Both emperors used armies to keep power and control. For example Emperor Hadrian used the army to deliver messages to other officials around the country, Emperor Hadrian also used the army to calm down revolts and suppress enemies. Likewise, Emperor Shi huang Di used the army to discipline robbers and miscreants by putting them into the ranks. He also used t
